DOBBLE ANIMALS – PERFECT FOR TRAVEL! [BLOGGER BOARD GAME CLUB]
Last month, we really enjoyed reviewing Ticket to Ride: First Journey as part of the Blogger Board Game Club, and this month we were sent two games to try. I’ll admit [ashamedly] that I looked at both of them and it felt like a bit of a let-down compared to the excitement we had opening Ticket to Ride. How wrong I was. This month, we were sent DOBBLE ANIMALS as one of those games and it comes in a little round tin. I looked at it, and put it aside thinking I would review it and it would gather dust in the games cupboard. Then we were invited on a project which involved traveling by train at peak traffic time, at the weekend, for over an hour each way. I was more than slightly terrified, and Gav suggested we pack a few little games to play. We popped DOBBLE ANIMALS into the rucksack and set off.
Asmodee say: “DOBBLE ANIMALS is a speedy observation game where players race to match the identical animal between cards. Simple to learn, quick to play but a challenge to master.”
The game is for ages 6 and up [but Hero is very good at it, and is 3], for 2-8 players and takes on average 15 minutes to play. The contents are many little circular cards with a variety of different sized animals illustrated on each.
That despite my first lack of excitement over this game, it’s brilliant. The game starts with a card in the middle chosen at random and then you have to look at your top card and see if you can match an animal on your card with an animal on the middle card. If you can, you shout out the animal’s name twice, like “DUCK! DUCK!” and then pop your card on top. The aim is to get rid of all of your cards before everyone else. It’s awesome and we played about 7 times on the trip out to Bournemouth.
The space it takes up is less than a drinks can, and there are no little parts to lose or complicated rules to read.
It improves the boys’ observational skills. Hooray.
DOBBLE ANIMALS is £12.99 and if I hadn’t played it, there is no way I’d pay that much for a little tin of cards. However, as I’m learning with the amount of games Gav and I are playing in the evenings [living the dream] instead of falling asleep in front of the TV, that price is a bargain – and the game is brilliant for everyone in the family.
