What is Kid K’nex?
Kid K’nex is a junior version of the highly popular K’nex sets. Made for little hands from 3+, Kid K’nex offers sets of larger, chunkier pieces of connecting plastic that enable imaginations to run wild and creatures to be brought to life. Hero loved playing with his brother and coming up with some new friends for me to photograph.
We were sent the Budding Builders and Safari Mates sets to try out. There are 21 pieces in the Safari set, and the Budding Builders Set contains 100 pieces, as it’s a value set. It turns out that you can create creatures and builds that are bigger than the box – and that’s pretty big!
Where can I buy them?
The sets are available in most of the normal places – Smyths, John Lewis, and so on – but we found some really great bargains on Amazon.
Kid K’Nex Budding Builders Set
This set is gorgeous! There are 100 pieces and 50 builds apparently – eyes and ears and all manner of bits nd bobs to make creatures out of! We made a few and these two are our current favourite. I’m not sure I can face tearing the Rabbit creature apart, but luckily neither can Hero and so he’s here to stay for a while. This set is around £34 RRP.
Kid K’nex Safari Mates
The Safari Mates Kid K’nex comes with 21 pieces including a lion’s mane made from foam, which can be used to make 5 different models, or freestyle when you add it to your other collections. We made the Lion for his little debut on our instagram stories in stop motion and he’s adorable. This set is around £10 RRP.
Why buy construction toys?
Kid K’nex are great for improving hand to eye coordination, dexterity and motor skills in children. Also, they’re a brilliant distraction from the lure of electronics which is like a gift for me. The sets are all interchangeable and sturdy, and we love the bright colours. Once created, the builds can be played with and displayed too, which my boys loved. Also, as a LEGO loving parent despite many years of treading on sharp bricks in the dark, these are heaven to stand on in comparison. haha.
The variety of pieces makes the little sets huge fun to collect and there are so many sets available that they’re perfect for birthday presents and for when Father Christmas comes too.
