Star Spangled Chips ‘n’ Dip
Simple Star Shaped 4th Chips ‘n’ and Dip to celebrate 4th July, New Year’s Eve or Bonfire Night
Hey, friends! Since discovering that tortilla chips are the easiest thing to make in any shape, the boys have been very keen to eat them. This week we’re celebrating Hero’s birthday – and as he shares his birthday with some very famous people, we decided to make nacho chips in the shape of stars to celebrate the red, white and blue! We already made Mickey Mouse Chips ‘n’ Dip and so these seemed like the next logical American symbol for 4th July nachos.
Even making them looked epic if I’m honest – all those little stars lined up on my new silicone baking trays, which are very cute. Gav doesn’t like the sticky feeling of them but I love them. No more baking paper!
It didn’t take long for them to be eaten – I think my boys actually prefer them to crisps [or potato chips if you’re American].
To Make 4th July Chips ‘n’ Dip, You Will Need:
Everything is in the recipe card below, but here are some helpful hints about the things you need.
- Tortilla wraps – we use corn and wheat ones, they’re very good and taste fresh when baked.
- Olive oil – we tried vegetable oil and sunflower too.
- Sea Salt [because it’s crunchy] and Black Pepper – although you can use paprika, garlic salt, whatever takes your fancy!
- Pastry brush for the oil, unless you’re using a spray! Be warned, the spray looks like suncream when applying it and I was slightly grossed out by it, although the boys had fun squirting it for me.
- A star shaped cutter – ours is about 2 inches diameter and the small one around 1.5cm.
- Sour Cream, Salsa, Guacamole, cheese, jalapeno peppers – whatever you like to cover yours in or dunk them through. This is your time to get your kids to eat avocado, and tomato without realising. Haha.
- Greaseproof Paper and Baking Tray – I have my new silicone baking sheets and they’ve been amazing. Just remember to place them on top of your baking tray, not directly in the oven.
- Chopping Board [for cutting out the tortilla chips]. I used a wooden one.
How to Make your Independence Day Nachos
It’s SO easy. Everything is in the recipe below but basically, it takes minutes to prepare them and cook them – the most time taken was the cutting out of the little stars. I like making the silhouette ones too because I think they look pretty, and Hero says they are extra crunchy.
What’s weird is that my children all avoid tomatoes like they’re poison, yet salsa is okay apparently. And definitely not tomato based. Nope. So here’s to 4th July Nachos and all the tomatoey-goodness I can get my boys to eat!
