Hey, friends! So we’re about to finish school for the holidays and it is HOT here in England for a change! The first ever extreme heat warning has been issued here in the South of England, and today it reached 30 degrees. I am melting. I watched Luca the other day on Disney+ and wished I lived in the sea too – I must have gone on about it for a fair bit because Hero drew Luca at school in class and bought me home a beautiful drawing of him for the fridge. haha.

And crazily, for some reason I thought it would be a great idea to make things with chocolate and icing sugar this week. So imagine the photos looking less sticky icing covered, and more smooth. haha. I did my best.

Ingredients for Back to School Apple Shaped Doughnuts

There are mini doughnuts, pretzel sticks, green fizzy belt sweets, mint leaves, red oil based food colouring and a bowl of icing sugar. Image by Sara-Jayne from Keep Up With The Jones Family.

These were so quick to make because I didn’t have to make the Mini Doughnuts -I got mine from ASDA ready made, although I do make my own from time to time, like my mini Cinnamon Doughnuts here. So, along with a box of mini doughnuts – or full sized ones, I’m not judging – you will need…

Pretzel Sticks – I either get mine from ASDA in the Polish Foods section or Marks and Spencer, with the Crisps. ASDA ones are longer but M&S ones are thicker.

Icing Sugar

Milk [for Mixing with the Icing Sugar] Usually I use water but the boys liked it with milk for these doughnuts.

Green Gummy Belts or Mint Leaves – One of mine would rather have real mint leaves than gummy ones so I did both..

Green and Red Food Colouring -I used Colour Mill’s Oil Based ones.

How to Make Your Apple Shaped Back to School Doughnuts

Step by step, here we go – I got messy because it was SO hot, but they’re so easy to make.

  1. Firstly, pop little pretzel stalks into the top of each mini doughnut.
  2. Mix the icing sugar and milk together. Make sure it’s quite thick – runny icing will not do for these.
  3. Add colouring, a few drops at a time until you get the colour you’re after.
  4. Dip mini doughnuts into colouring face down, then raise slowly and horizontally from bowl.
  5. Turn over and leave on tray to set in refrigerator if needed.
  6. Cut leaves from fizzy gummy belts with scissors [or use mint leaves]
  7. Apply leaves next to stalks.
  8. Serve.
